Obesity: A Short Explanation
In the United Kingdom, Obesity is increasing year and on year and it is currently reported in the USA that one in five adults can be categotised being 'clinically Obese.' In England, levels of obesity have tripled since 1980, and there is no sign of the upward trend stopping. Currently, over half of women and about two thirds of men are either overweight or obese. The consequence of being overweight or obese increases the risk of heart disease as well as other diseases including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and osteoarthritis.
The consequence of this is that there is an estimated cost to the country is 18 million sick days and 30,000 deaths a year, and 40,000 lost years of working life in England alone (source: National Audit Office 2000). In addition, deaths are linked to obesity shorten life by nine years on average within England.
